Tricolored herons, formerly known as Louisiana herons, are common wading birds along the southeastern US coastline.
This particular work stems from a trip to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville, FL. Early one morning, I caught sight of this heron along one of the dike roads. As it took off, the backlight from the rising sun caught my attention and inspired me to paint this piece.
