This young pileated woodpecker - the largest living woodpecker species in the United States - is keeping an eye out for its parents, who are out foraging.
I stumbled across this youngster while I was out hiking along the urban Shingle Creek Trail in Orlando, Florida. He wasn't shy about calling out, but when he noticed me, he stopped and watched closely. From his high perch, he didn't feel the need to duck back into the safety of the nest cavity, so I got quite the opportunity to photograph and observe him.
